The Franciscan Friars
The Order of Friars Minors, also called the Franciscan Friars, is a Catholic religious order founded by St Francis of Assisi in 1209.
The word ‘friar’ means “brother”, and the Order of Friars Minor, or “Order of Lesser Brothers”, is first and foremost a brotherhood. Franciscan Friars seek to follow Jesus Christ more closely, with the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and in accordance with the Rule of Life composed by St Francis.
Through their religious profession, Franciscan Friars dedicate themselves totally to God in obedience, with nothing of their own, and in chastity. They seek to live a life of prayer and devotion, bear witness to the Gospel in a spirit of charity, ongoing personal conversion and minority, and preach reconciliation, peace and justice. They strive to recognise those around them as their brothers and sisters, engage in dialogue with believers of other faiths, and show respect for all creation.

With 40 men serving the people of God in a wide variety of settings, we, the Franciscan Friars, Custody of St. Anthony (Malaysia-Singapore-Brunei) strive to continue our Order’s 800-year old mission, bringing the Gospel of Christ into the everyday experience of men and women through our life in fraternity and compassionate service to all.
Originally occupied by the Franciscan Sisters of Sarawak, this building has been leased to the Franciscans as a parish house since 2000, for the friars serving in St Ann’s Mission.
Also known informally as the ‘Student House’, Greccio Friary is a fomation community in Chestnut Drive, Singapore. Inspired by St Francis of Assisi, the brothers of Greccio seek to follow the call to live the Gospel in daily life, in fraternity, work, prayer, and study.
Built in 1957 as a Sociological Centre, St Anthony’s is the main friary of the Custody in Malaysia-Singapore-Brunei. Currently, the friary houses the Custody administration, as well as a formation community.
